Loc Grooming For Neat, Stylish Dreads

Dreadlocks are simply the natural form hair takes when it is allowed to grow on its own. They form when hair is no longer combed, brushed or has chemicals applied. Strands will eventually spiral around each other, until it forms a lock beginning almost at the root. In a salon however, a dreadlocks stylist creates locs and does loc grooming for a neat head of locs. The service is available in many Brooklyn, NY salons.

A dreadlocks stylist will part your hair at the root with a comb in squares of the size that you would like your dreadlocks. Only a small amount of any products such as beeswax will be used and it will be rubbed it in until it is completely dissolved. Products that are too thick and will cake in your hair are best avoided.

The most common method used to form dreads is twisting. It is a natural method and it gives a stylish control over the size of the dreads. A fine-toothed comb is used to twist the section of hair from the tip down to the root by turning the comb around. The hair is then put under a dryer for the beeswax to dry.

For one who already has dreads, the best time to get them re-twisted is after washing them. They will be re-twisted the same way as new locs. A small of amount is locking agent is applied to the locs, they are re-twisted and then put under a hair dryer to dry. The ends are also trimmed every time the locs are re-twisted.

There is a false belief that dreadlocks are the style of choice for those who do not want to put much into grooming their hair. Locs need to be kept clean and well groomed just like other styles. They should be washed at least every three weeks. They tend to loosen after washing and they should thus be re-twisted after washing.

There are products formulated specifically for dreadlocks that are targeted to strengthening your hair to help it stay strong. After washing and then twisting your locks especially in the first stages, you should dry your hair immediately to avoid attracting dirt. Also, try covering your hair every night. Keeping your hair clean helps keep your hair strong.

The look of a styled head of dreadlocks will stand out from one with unkempt locs. You have to have a degree of resilience to wear dreadlocks with confidence so be open and creative with how you style them.

Styling is best done after cleaning and re-twisting new growth. However, you should still moisturize your hair daily with light natural oils. Try to avoid wearing pull back styles too much which would recede the hair line. When you do however do pull back styles try not to use rubber bands that would rip your hair.

One popular look is curly locs. They are simply done by plaiting locs when they are a bit wet or after applying a little gel. If you are doing this at home, leave them to dry overnight. In a salon, they will be dried under a dryer and then undone to release the curls. When you want a change, braids can be done on top of locs. Dreads can also be colored in highlights, streaks or at the ends. Beads can also be put in some of them for an ethnic look.
