3 Methods for Clearing Mental Clutter

Many adults with ADD have a hard time slowing down their brains. Thoughts often come at whirlwind speed, and it can be hard to concentrate on the tasks at hand when so many other thoughts are floating around in the brain. I call this "mental clutter."

Often times, mental clutter is made up of worries and bad feelings. (Very few people get overwhelmed by the amount of positive thoughts in their heads!) Regrets of the past and worries about the future can easily overshadow the present moment. Self-doubt can also take up a lot of space in the mind. When an excess of these types of thoughts take over in the brain, it can be stressful, upsetting, and sometimes even paralyzing.

The best way to clear this mental clutter is to process the thoughts, rather than letting them swim around in your brain. Doing so will allow you to focus on the present moment, and feel more calm and centered.

The following 3 methods have proven very helpful in clearing mental clutter.

1. Write
A great way to clear mental clutter is to transfer the thoughts from your brain onto paper. This can be in the form of a to-do list, an email to a supportive person in your life, or a journal entry. When the thoughts are recorded, there is no need for your brain to hold on to them.
Additionally, if you feel weighed down by a situation (like an argument with a family member) writing about it can help you process your feelings. You can get a better grip on the events, how you feel, and what you might have done differently. A page or two might be all it takes.

2. Talk
Many people with ADD are "verbal processors." This means that we often work through thoughts and feelings by talking them out. It helps to have an objective person to talk to, who can mirror your thoughts and talk them out with you. However, the very act of talking is often what does the trick, so having someone to talk to isn't always necessary. Many people find that talking into a tape recorder suits their needs. Others talk to plants or animals. (I talk to my dog so much that I'm surprised she doesn't talk back by now!)

3. Move
Some ADDers can clear mental clutter by moving. Something as simple as a 10-minute walk can give the brain a needed jolt. Others may find that they feel free of extraneous thoughts after a visit to the gym. The time alone combined with the physical activity proves to be a successful formula for some ADDers to work through their mental clutter.

It's best to experiment with the different methods and see which work best for you in the different areas of your life. The important thing to know is that with a little time-out, mental clutter can be cleared!

The Right Mental Attitude: For Anything Fitness

All areas of life including health, fitness/fat loss, career changes, relationships, etc. will always begin with the right mental attitude.

Your mental attitude is the way you think about health, food and exercise. It is also the way you think about your overall life in general. You either react or respond to life through your attitude.

It is a fact that there are many other so called "reasons" or "excuses" as to why programs may not work for individuals. However, there is one reason that I believe is the culprit. The biggest reason I think that many diet and exercise programs don't work is that; the individual does not commit themselves 100%. They don't clearly know what they want and they take no responsibility for their actions and results.

Give It All You've Got... and More!

After "trying half-heartedly" for a few weeks, they throw up their hands and say "it doesn't work!" And who do they blame? They blame the creator of the program, the people around them, or even genetics. Every person is responsible for themselves.

If you wanted to climb Mount Everest, you would start by knowing that you want to get to the top of the mountain and then taking one step towards the top. And with persistent effort, that one step leads to another step and then another. Finally, you've arrived at the top.

To mould your body and change your health is also very much like working your way up the corporate ladder. Generally speaking, you would start at the bottom and work your way up.

Are We Getting lazy as a species?

This is a New Age we live in where technology rules the earth. Technology helps the human race move forward. It helps industries manufacture and deliver goods and services much faster and in more efficient ways. It helps the consumer book a flight without having to walk or drive to the travel agency. Technology will cut down the time of travel needed to go to work and back. And as you can see, it has also made some people incredibly lazy.

This laziness factor plays a major role in making people think that they should get desired results immediately. An example of this is; wanting to lose 100 pounds in exchange for one month of sit-ups. They expect nature to bend its rules for them. It doesn't work that way and it never will. For one to live healthy, burn fat, or gain weight it takes time, energy and possibly money and there is no other way around it. You have to be willing to give it all you got and more!

Start just by taking one step at a time. Focus on one thing at a time. If the end result you want is a slim toned body but you're overweight, start by losing the extra weight, first. Get into the habit of thinking and acting in a new way that will take you from overweight to average and then from average to fit.

Your mind and what you feed it helps develop your self-esteem. Self-esteem is also known as self-image - the way you see yourself. Do you know that your body is entirely controlled by your mind? Every piece of muscle tissue and all of your organs are completely controlled by your mind, consciously and unconsciously. The mind is responsible for every move you make. As you read these words you have been literally telling the muscles in your eye to do so. The point is that you can tell any part of your body to do anything - and it will. Feed your mind with the proper information on dieting and exercise (as a lifestyle change) and tell your body to follow - it will.

You are the driver and your body is the car. There is Health Avenue, Fat Lane, and Fitness Street - which road will you choose to drive on?
